Nearly 100 dog bite victims seek relief in Chandigarh
Chandigarh, July 22
Nearly 100 victims of dog bite have submitted applications to receive compensation in the city.
A meeting regarding the compensation for persons affected by accidents due to stray animals or dog bites was conducted under the chairmanship of DC Vinay Pratap Singh today. The initiative follows the Punjab and Haryana High Court order mandating the formation of committees in Punjab, Haryana, and UT Chandigarh to process claims from affected individuals.
According to the HC judgment, a compensation of Rs 10,000 will be awarded for each teeth mark in dog bites.
Additionally, for cases where flesh is pulled out from the skin up to 0.2 cm, Rs 10,000 will be given per instance.
The committee was formed on July 2 this year.
The meeting was attended by representatives from various departments, including SSP Traffic, the Deputy Conservator of Forest, all SDMs, Medical Superintendent of GMSH, Sector 16, and Joint Director, Animal Husbandry.
The DC emphasised that all applications must include a medical report and a daily diary report (DDR) from the respective police station. To facilitate this, the Medical Superintendent of GMSH 16 was directed to ensure prompt treatment and issuance of medico-legal certificates at dog bite clinics in Sectors 19 and 38 and the GMSH-16.
Approximately 100 applications were reviewed by the committee.
To simplify the application process, the National Informatics Centre (NIC) has been asked to develop an online portal for receiving applications and awarding compensation. Until the portal is operational, manual applications will be accepted at the office of the MC in Sector 17.
