Chandigarh, July 6

The Municipal Corporation (MC) will install lights in the back lanes of houses at an estimated cost of Rs 8.19 crore. The initiative is aimed at illuminating dark spots in residential areas, thereby curbing thefts and illegal activities.

The proposal, which will be tabled for discussion and approval at the coming General House meeting of the MC on July 9, emphasises the need for lighting up dark spots to improve security.

Move aimed at curbing thefts

“At present, there is no lighting in the back lanes, which increases the risk of thefts and other illegal activities at night. Councillors had requested lighting in these back lanes in their respective wards. Following their request, a plan was devised to install lights, which involves fixing cables on walls as it is difficult to dig up narrow lanes,” said MC officials.

Amended rules for Night Food Street

Besides, the MC is set to amend the terms and conditions for the allotment of kiosks at the Night Food Street, Sector 14, located opposite the PGI. Two of the four kiosks are vacant, for which the MC will hold an e-auction with updated regulations.

The proposed amendments include measures to prevent overcharging. There will be a WhatsApp number where customers can lodge their complaints about overcharging. Also, boards displaying the approved rate list will be put up at the street. Licensees must obtain and submit all permits required, such as the food safety licence, within 45 days after receiving the allotment letter, or risk forfeiture of the security deposit.

e-auction of grounds

The MC also proposes to e-auction all commercial spaces, including the Housing Board traffic light ground in Mani Majra, Circus Ground in Sector 17 and the Exhibition Ground in Sector 34, to earn more revenue.
