The Market Committee is going to levy garbage cess on all buildings located in the grain, fruit and vegetable market in Sector 26.

According to officials, the rates were being finalised for this, after which the committee will collect the cess and use it for further garbage management.

A meeting was held today under the chairmanship of the Committee Administrator. Opposing the proposal, arhtiyas stated that they were already paying 2 per cent market committee fee and opposed this additional burden.

The officials said the committee would issue instructions after finalising the cess rates for buildings under its control in Sector 26 soon.

Earlier, the cess was collected by the Municipal Corporation in the grain market. The cess was likely to be Rs 300 per trader per month. The committee has to pay about Rs 920 per tonne of garbage to the MC. Every day, 20 to 25 tonne of garbage is generated from the market.
