Four persons found begging in the city have been arrested under the Haryana Beggar Act-1971. The UT Administration is holding a drive to create a beggar-free city. The police said Jagan Paswan (36), a resident of Nayagaon, was found begging in Sector 17, Keshra (49) of Jaipur, Rajasthan, near the Housing Board light point, Sonarayan (48) of Sawai Madhopur district in Rajasthan at the Hallo Majra light point and Panna Lal (45) of Mani Majra near Shastri Nagar light point. All of them were arrested and later released on bail. TNS

Mobile phone snatched

Three unidentified pedestrians have been booked for snatching. Complainant, a resident of Bapu Dham Colony, Sector 26, reported that the miscreants snatched his phone near Transport light point.

Man held with 9.6 gm heroin

Panchkula: A team of the anti narcotics cell arrested Anil Kumar, alias Pintu, who was residing in Kalka, on Tuesday. A police spokesperson said the cell received a tip-off regarding Pintu, a tenant in the Giddawali Road area of Kalka, going to sell heroin to someone. On receiving the information, the team, led by Sub-Inspector Bhim Singh conducted a raid and surrounded and captured a him. On searching the accused, 9.96 grams of heroin and Rs 200 cash were recovered from him. A case was registered against him under Section 21 of the NDPS Act at Kalka police station. TNS

2-day startup fest kicks off

Mohali: Ignite 2024, a two-day event, organised by Technology Business Incubator (TBI) at Chandigarh University (CU) was inaugurated on Wednesday. The national-level event aims at providing a platform to aspiring entrepreneurs and startups to candidates to transform innovative ideas into successful business ventures. As part of a ‘Cohort Exhibition’, the students displayed their start-up prototypes and products at more than 60 stalls. In the ‘Start-up Haat’ competition, after evaluation, 35 startups were shortlisted out of the total 4,738 registrations (ideas). The final winners of the competition will be announced on Thursday.

Two arrested for murder

Mohali: The police arrested two Mohali youths for the murder of a ragpicker, Farashat, of Daulatpur village near Chappar Chiri in the wee hours of August 5. Suspects — Balkar (28) and Gurtej (21) — hacked the victim to death by dismembering his head with an axe and throwing it near Sector 91. The police said the duo had tried to loot the victim’s bike cart when he was out to collect scrap near Fateh Burj. The victim tried to resist the attack by hitting Balkar on his head with a rod after which he was hacked to death.

3 nabbed for looting Rs 5.5L

Mohali: The police arrested two brothers, belonging to a three member gang, for looting Rs 5.5 lakh from Phase 1 resident Ashwani Soni in Phase 7 on October 9. The suspects were identified as Arjan Kumar and Rohit Kumar of Khoonimajra, Kharar, and their accomplice. The police recovered Rs 1.65 lakh from them.
