At Rs 197 crore, GST mop-up drops 10% in September
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection in the city last month witnessed a decline of 10% against the gross levy collected during the corresponding period in 2023.
According to the Ministry of Finance, the collection for September this year stood at Rs 197 crore, Rs 22 crore less than Rs 219 crore mopped up during the same month last year. In 2022, the UT had collected Rs 206 crore as GST during the month of September.
In August, the city had seen an increase of 27% in the tax collection against the gross levy collected during the corresponding period in 2023.The collection for August stood at Rs 244 crore, Rs 52 crore more than Rs 192 crore collected during the same month in 2023.
In July, the collection was 8% more than the gross levy collected during the corresponding period in 2023. The collection for July stood at Rs 233 crore, Rs 16 crore more than Rs 217 crore received during the same month a year before.
The ministry did not share details of the tax collected during the months of June and January this year.
The UT Administration had announced a GST collection of Rs 178 crore for May this year, marking a 6% increase from the previous year, i.e. from Rs 168 crore to Rs 178 crore after settlement of IGST. The rise in collections was attributed to enhanced compliance measures, including scrutiny, inspection and audit, said an official of the Excise and Taxation Department.
The collection for April saw a rise of 23% at Rs 313 crore. It was Rs 58 crore more than Rs 255 crore generated in 2023.
