All set for PM Modi visit to PEC today
The UT Administration has made tight security arrangements for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab Engineering College (PEC) in Sector 12 here on Tuesday. Around 4,000 police personnel and 10 paramilitary units have been deployed across the city to maintain law and order.
The Prime Minister will arrive at the old airport around 11:25 am. From there, he is expected to fly by an MI-17 helicopter to the Rajindra Park helipad, Sector 1, and then travel by road to PEC, which is less than 1 km away.
Home Minister Amit Shah, who arrived in the city on Monday evening, will also attend the event along with Punjab Governor-cum-UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria and senior officials from the Administration and Police Department.
Newly recruited IPS officers from across the country have been invited to witness a presentation by the Chandigarh Police on the integration and functioning of new criminal law applications.
There will be a live demonstration showcasing how various digital platforms such as e-Sakshya, Nyay Setu, Nyay Shruti and e-Summons have streamlined law enforcement, judicial procedures and evidence management. These applications have been developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) in collaboration with the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) under the guidance of the Ministry of Home Affairs. The theme of the event at PEC is “Secure Society, Developed India — From Punishment to Justice”.
The Prime Minister will dedicate to the nation the successful implementation of three transformative criminal laws —Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, which were implemented nationwide on July 1. The programme will showcase the practical application of the laws, with demonstrations on how these are already reshaping the criminal justice landscape. A live demonstration will be held, simulating a crime scene investigation.
The conceptualisation of the three laws was driven by the vision of the PM to remove colonial era laws and to transform the judicial system by shifting focus from punishment to justice.
Security drill causes snarl-ups
Traffic jams were witnessed on Monday during a security rehearsal ahead of the PM’s visit. Mock drills during the peak hours on key routes caused snarl-ups. During the arrival of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the evening, temporary road closures were effected to clear way for his convoy, which led to traffic jams at junctions.
Avoid these roads from 11 am to 3:30 pm today
