A local court has granted default bail to a person, Raju, arrested in an alleged fraud case after the Chandigarh Police failed to file the charge-sheet within the statutory time period of 60 days.

Had demanded Rs 35,000- 65,000 for jobs

The police registered the FIR on January 5 on the complaint of a woman, Sunita of Dhanas, and some others persons. She said the accused met her on January 4 in Dhanas Colony and told her that he had a tender to recruit 100 cleaners in government schools. Following this, she along with 10 to 12 persons met the accused in a school, where he demanded between Rs 35,000 to 65,000 for a job.

The police registered the FIR on January 5 on the complaint of a woman, Sunita of Dhanas, and some others persons. She said the accused met her on January 4 in Dhanas Colony and told her that he had a tender to recruit 100 cleaners in government schools. Following this, she along with 10 to 12 persons met the accused in a school, where he demanded between Rs 35,000 to 65,000 for a job.

She said she gave Rs 35,000 to the accused, who took money from many persons, but still did get them jobs. She alleged that a woman was also involved in the fraud who collected money.

Ajay Mehra, counsel for the accused, argued that the accused had been custody since May 2 (61 days) and the police failed to file the charge-sheet within 60 days. In such a situation the accused is entitled for the default bail under Section 167(2) of the CrPC, he added.

After hearing of the arguments the court said the challan had not been filed and Section 167(2) provides for default bail. Keeping this in view, the bail application of the accused is allowed, subject to furnishing bail bonds of Rs 40,000 with one surety, it said.

Youth gets 20-yr jail in POCSO case

A local court has sentenced a youth to 20 years rigorous imprisonment in a two-year-old POCSO case. The police registered the case against the accused on July 25, 2022, on the complaint of the minor victim. She had told the police that the accused forced herself on her in June 2022 when she was at his residence and threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident to anyone.

Thereafter, the accused continued forcible physical relations with her by intimidating her. During the course of investigation, the accused was arrested. After completion of investigation the challan was presented in the court against the accused. The court after hearing the arguments sentenced the accused to undergo 20 years rigorous imprisonment.
