Dera Bassi, January 30

Mohali administration said on Saturday that authorities had culled 85,000 birds in three farms in the district— Alpha, Royal and Evergreen—after cases of avian influenza were confirmed in all three places.

Mohali’s Deputy Commissioner Girish Dayalan said authorities destroyed 125 tons of feed and about 3,000 eggs in an operation that began on January 22. In addition, large quantities of manure found on these farms were buried in the ground.

All three farms have been ordered shut for three months, and will be sprayed with Formalin every fortnight during this period, Dayalan said. The farms will be washed using water pumps after three months and then allowed to reopen.
