788 violators challaned, 137 vehicles impounded

A total of 788 traffic violators were challaned and 137 vehicles impounded by the Chandigarh Traffic Police on Holi. Helmetless riding and rash driving topped the chart. Only two challans were issued for drunken driving.

According to the police, a total of 453 challans were issued for helmetless riding of which 254 challans were issued to the riders and 199 challans for pillion riders. A total of 69 challans were issued for triple-riding. 

670 drivers face licence suspension

  • The police said the licences of 670 drivers would be recommended for suspension for violation of various sections of the motor vehicle rules. This year, at least 943 licences have already been recommended for suspension.

The police also issued challans for various offences falling under dangerous driving. A total of 134 challans were issued for over-speeding, 38 challans were issued for taking a dangerous turn, 11 for driving vehicle on a cycle track, six challans for using mobile phone while driving, five challans for wrong-side driving and seven for jumping the red light.

The police said 10 challans were issued to juveniles. The police said 135 people were caught driving without a driving licence.

PU video goes viral

A video purportedly shot on the Panjab University (PU) campus went viral in which youths are seen throwing colours on two girls riding an Activa. The video shows unknown youths throwing colours on the girls and applying these on their faces against their wish. The girls, who were negotiating their way through traffic, were about to fall.

The video went viral after which people posted it on Twitter handle of the Chandigarh Traffic Police demanding action against the rowdy revellers.

The police traced the girls, but they refused to lodge a compliant in this regard.
