6,180 voters to elect Gharuan’s first-ever nagar panchayat today

As many as 6,180 voters will seal the fate of 28 candidates across 11 wards of Gharuan in its first election since being upgraded to a nagar panchayat under former chief minister (CM) Charanjit Singh Channi’s term on Saturday.

The area, which falls under the Chamkaur Sahib assembly seat, is witnessing a keen contest between the Congress party and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in five wards.

In the other six wards, a triangular contest is expected.

Six independent candidates are also in the fray.

Former CM Charanjit Singh Channi of the Congress and AAP sitting MLA Charanjit Singh have campaigned extensively for their respective sides.

A fierce battle is also brewing in the Kharar and Nayagaon bypolls, which has drawn the attention of Kharar MLA Anmol Gagan Maan, who hit the campaign trail for AAP.

The police conducted also conducted a flag march ahead of the polls.

To ensure that there are no disruptions to the law-and-order situation, liquor vends falling within the municipal limits of Kharar (ward No.16) Gharuan (all wards), Nayagaon (ward No. 16) and Banur (ward No.6) have been ordered to remain closed on December 21.
