5th round of foot & mouth disease vaccination concludes
The fifth round of the foot and mouth disease (FMD) vaccination has successfully concluded in the city. Under the National Animal Disease Control Programme of the Government of India, the vaccination programme was taken up by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, UT, since its inception in 2020. This round was launched in all villages of the city with effect from November 1 and concluded on November 30.
On the occasion, Hari Kallikat, Secretary, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, stated that the FMD was among the most serious diseases of animals in term of economic impact and was globally recognised as priority disease for control and eradication.
The department vaccinated all large and small animals free of cost against the FMD at the doorstep of livestock farmers as per government guidelines.
Paviter Singh, Director, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, said that till date five rounds of FMD vaccination had been completed and 95,768 vaccines administrated. “The vaccination will result in effective management of diseases in animals as well as in humans. We should keep hygienic conditions to combat viral infection,” he added.
Kanwarjit Singh, Joint Director, Animal Husbandry, revealed that the disease was among the most serious ones due to its economic impact. He further said that control of FMD could be achieved by mass and repeated vaccination of susceptible livestock at regular intervals till the incidence of disease came down.
