3-hour blockade at Lalru, Dera Bassi and Bhagomajra, Solkhian toll plazas
Road users and commuters were inconvenienced as several farmer union members blocked roads at inter-state and inter-district roads in Mohali district for three hours (noon to 3pm) on Sunday.
Samyukt Kisan Morcha had announced a statewide three-hour blockade against alleged tardy procurement of paddy.
Rice millers and commission agents have also joined the protest.
With the wedding season on, the protest played a spoilsport for many marriage parties on Sunday afternoon.
At Lalru, SKM, BKU (Lakhowal) leaders blocked the National Highway from noon to 3pm, highlighting the difficulties being faced by the farmers in paddy procurement.
The connectivity on the Punjab-Haryana border was affected due to the blockade at Lalru. Nearby Dera Bassi also witnessed disruption and chaotic traffic in the afternoon.
Farmers blocked the road near Bhagomajra toll plaza and resorted to sloganeering against the state government. Protesters blocked Landran Chowk by placing tyres on the road. Commuters said protesters had blocked almost all major roads.
At Ropar, farmers blocked the National Highway near Solkhian toll plaza.
BKU (Lakhowal) general secretary Jaspal Singh Niamian said the state government had miserably failed in starting paddy procurement from October 1.
