The Panjab University has also been taking measures to ensure that women, especially students on the campus, feel secure on the campus, said Vice-Chancellor Renu Vig. Teams of hostel wardens have been instructed to patrol the hostels from 8pm to 11pm every day, the VC said.

The DSW also confirmed the development and said patrolling had been going on since Monday. “A total of three committees with seven wardens each have been formed. Each committee is headed by a chairperson and they have been instructed to submit reports every night,” DSW Amit Chauhan said.

The wardens have been checking attendance registers, identity cards and also ensuring that no outsider is present in the hostels. “No such case has been reported as of now and we are taking every step to ensure that the scenario remains the same in future as well,” the DSW added.

“The security officials have also been asked to ensure that all paths in the university, especially the ones leading to the library and hostels, are well lit. I have told the chief security officer to increase the vigil on the campus,” Vig said. The hostel wardens have also been asked to identify the black spots in and around the hostels. Some hostel wardens have also asked the authorities concerned to install more cameras around their respective hostels.

Commenting on the development, Girls Hostel No. 3 warden Simranpreer Kaur said, “I have asked for the installation of three more cameras around the hostel. The inside premises are all well covered by CCTV cameras. We are making every effort to ensure the students stay safe on the campus.”
