A pall of gloom descended over a family in Mustafabad village while they were preparing for a wedding after a gas cylinder caught fire.

A 50-year-old woman, Gurdish Kaur, lost her life in the incident, while five others received burn injuries.

Those injured have been identified as Raj Rani, Kuljit Kaur, and Rajinder Kaur, all residents of Mustafabad village; and Navjot Singh, resident of Barwali; and Baisakha Singh, resident of Lakhanpur village.

Avtar Singh said that his daughter’s marriage was scheduled for November 24 for which his relatives had come over to his residence to attend the festivities.

He said last night his father-in-law Baisakha and another relative, Navjot, were preparing food in the kitchen when gas started leaking from the cylinder. He said by the time they realised that gas was leaking from the gas cylinder it caught fire.

He said six people were hurt during the accident.

He said the relatives immediately rushed all the injured people to Fatehgarh Sahib Civil Hospital.

Avtar added that Kuljit Kaur, after receiving first aid at the Civil Hospital in Fatehgarh Sahib, was referred to a government hospital in Chandigarh, while all others who had received more than 50 per cent burn injuries on their bodies were referred to the PGIMER, Chandigarh.

He said Gurdish Kaur scummbed to her injuries while receiving treatment at the PGI, while the condition of all others was still being termed as critical.

The family members said they had informed the Police Department about the accident, and that they had launched an investigation into the matter.
