Chandigarh Administrator VP Singh Badnore launches 4 Smart City projects

UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore today inaugurated four projects under the Smart Cities Mission.

The launch of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system for tertiary-treated water distribution, SCADA for monitoring of door-to-door waste collection vehicles and online building plan approval system (OBPAS) for commercial units was held at Rose Club in Sector 16. Besides, Phase 1 of the public bicycle sharing project was inaugurated at the Shanti Kunj parking area, Sector 16.

On the occasion, Badnore said the SCADA system for monitoring door-to-door waste collection vehicles was an integral part of the pan-city information and communication technology (ICT)-based solutions under the Smart Cities Mission.

The project aims at improving the efficiency of collection, transportation and disposal of municipal solid waste in a cost-effective and environment-friendly manner. It will help monitor, track and manage various tasks related to door-to-door waste collection through GPS-enabled devices mounted on 642 vehicles. The movement of the vehicles will be monitored by a team at the command and control centre to ensure assigned routes are followed.

He said citizens could register on Clean Chandigarh application to get a notification on their mobile phone when the vehicle was about to reach their vicinity. They could also see the route of the waste collection vehicle assigned to their area. In the event of vehicle breakdown, the command centre would get an alert and a replacement vehicle would be assigned to complete the work.

Chandigarh Smart City Ltd (CSCL) has deputed a dedicated team at the Help Desk (0172-2787200) for grievances related to door-to-door waste collection. Badnore said citizens would be able to lodge a complaint through the mobile application. The system would enable officials to check the quantity of dry and wet waste generated in the city.

On the public bike sharing system, he said Chandigarh was the only city to launch the project on pan-city basis and was proud to announce the deployment of pedal-assisted hybrid e-bicycles also. The project would be extended to 5,000 bicycles and 617 stations in a year, making it India’s densest and largest public bike sharing system.

Mayor Ravi Kant Sharma said monitoring and data collection related to tertiary-treated water would help in analysis of flow of tertiary-treated water along with the quantity and quality parameters.

KK Yadav, MC Commissioner-cum-CEO, CSCL, said the OBPAS would enable citizens to apply for the approval of commercial building plans. He said that through the system, building plans could be submitted online. SMS and email notifications would be sent to citizens in connection with their application status and further to pay the fee online.
