Fatehgarh Sahib, July 9
Panic prevailed among the residents of Chanarthal Kalan village as the soil from the banks of the Bhakra Canal passing through the village started eroding, causing breaches on both sides of the canal. Residents said they are keeping a close watch on the situation, adding that they have apprised the administration and the canal department officials of the matter.
Sarpanch Jagdeep Singh Nambardar said breaches occurred in the canal at regular intervals, adding that they have brought the matter to the attention of the district administration and the canal department officials. He said the temporary repair work has been initiated; however, no concrete measures have been taken for repair so far. He said it seems as if the administration is waiting for a major incident to occur.
He said the slabs of the canal are in a dilapidated condition, and the villagers have brought the matter to the attention of the administration numerous times, but to no avail. He said the canal department needs to repair the canal as soon as possible. He said that there is a government school along with the canal, adding that if it breaks, it may lead to great loss of life and property.
XEN Sandeep Singh said some parts of the canal have been damaged and breaches will be repaired, adding that people do not need to be scared. Deputy Commissioner Parneet Shergill said the administration is keeping close watch on the canal and aware of the situation.
