Centre opens probe into CA’s death due to ‘excess workload’
The Ministry of Labour on Thursday commenced investigation into allegations of a young chartered accountant (CA) succumbing to exploitative work environment at Ernst & Young in Pune.

“Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Anna Sebastian Perayil. A thorough investigation into the allegations of unsafe and exploitative work environment is underway. We are committed to ensuring justice and the Ministry of Labour has officially taken up this complaint,” Minister of State for Labour Shobha Karandlaje said on X.
She was replying to a request for investigation made by former minister Rajiv Chandrashekhar.
Anna, a 26-year-old resident of Kangarappady in Kalamassery, Kerala, died on July 20, four months after she joined the company as an audit and assurance executive.
Today, representatives from Ernst & Young sought a meeting with Anna’s parents in Kochi.
Anna’s mother had earlier written to the company chief flagging “toxic work culture” at the office.
After the letter hit social media, the company issued a statement offering condolences and promising to continue to find ways of improving and providing a healthy workspace for employees.
Anna’s mother said in her letter that the company did not send anyone to the funeral. The company in its statement said, “Anna was part of the audit team at SR Batliboi, a member firm of EY Global, in Pune ...That her promising career was cut short in this tragic manner is an irreparable loss for all of us.”
EY added, “We are taking the family’s correspondence with the utmost seriousness and humility. We place the highest importance on the well-being of all employees and will continue to find ways to improve and provide a healthy workplace for our 1,00,000 people across EY member firms in India.”
