Caste census will strengthen Constitution: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, August 24
Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said caste census would lend further strength to the Constitution, rather than weakening it as feared by some quarters.
Addressing the Samvidhan Samman Sammelan at Prayagraj in UP, Rahul Gandhi said caste census, socio-economic survey and institutional survey were meant to strengthen the Constitution.
“It is the poor people who are fiercely protective about the Constitution, not Adaniji,” Rahul said, making a dig at PM Narendra Modi’s ‘close friendship’ with Adani Group founder Gautam Adani.
The Congress leader said giving the OBCs their due and increasing the limit for reservation beyond the 50 per cent limit were the need of the hour.
“A huge majority of the country’s population is constituted by the dalits, OBCs and the tribals. But one does not find representative from any of these communities in the list of the country’s top industrialist, top news anchor. Similar is the story with the judiciary,” Rahul said.
He said minorities, including religious minorities, were the worst sufferers under the present regime as they were victims of direct atrocities.
‘No Dalit, tribal in Miss India list’
- Even decades after the adoption of the Constitution, 90% population — comprising OBCs and minorities — is still marginalised with no say in the corporate world, media, and not much in judiciary, said Rahul Gandhi.
- “I took out a list of Miss India. I thought there would be at least one Dalit or adivasi woman. But no, neither Dalit, nor tribal nor OBC,” he said, stressing the lack of representation.
