Campus notes: Nagar kirtan at Guru Nanak Dev University
Amritsar: A Nagar Kirtan was held at Guru Nanak Dev University on Tuesday in honour of the upcoming 550th Prakash Purb of Guru Nanak Dev. The procession was led by Guru Nanak Dev University Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh Sandhu, who carried the palanquin containing the Guru Granth Sahib. He was joined by the heads of various non-teaching departments and faculty members. The nagar kirtan, led by the Panj Pyaras, concluded at the university’s Gurdwara. In the lead-up to the Prakash Purb on November 15, frequent Prabhat Ferris are also being held across the campus.
Karate championship
Amritsar: Students from Shri Ram Ashram Public School displayed their martial arts skills at the SGFI Punjab State Karate Championship, held recently in Jalandhar. The tournament saw participation from 22 district teams. The school principal, Dr Vinodita Sankhyan, congratulated the students on their achievements, stating, “We are proud of our young champions. Our school aims to nurture not only academic excellence but also sportsmanship, ensuring the holistic development of our students.”
National Education Day celebrations
Amritsar: Guru Nanak Dev University celebrated National Education Day today, marking the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, India’s first Education Minister. In his inaugural speech, Dr Amit Kauts, the Head of the Department of Education, emphasised the significance of education in shaping the nation’s future. He honoured Maulana Azad as a visionary leader who played a crucial role in the establishment of key educational institutions such as AICTE, UGC, IIT Kharagpur and ICCR. To commemorate the day, the Department of Education organised several educational activities, including a presentation on the history of National Education Day by Dr Sharanjit Kaur, a life sketch of Maulana Azad by Dr Anchal, and a discussion on Azad’s contributions to education. The programme also included a panel discussion on “NEP 2020 and its implications, provisions, and challenges in the field of education with respect to a nation’s development.”
Online seminar on criminal laws
Amritsar: The Department of Laws at Guru Nanak Dev University hosted an online seminar titled “The Expanding Horizons of New Criminal Laws: Issues and Challenges,” with over 140 participants from across India and abroad. The seminar featured nine technical sessions, divided into two slots, where experts and researchers shared insights on the evolving landscape of criminal laws. Dr Meenu Verma, Head of the Department of Laws, delivered the welcome address. The chief guest for the session was Amardeep Singh Bains, Civil Judge (Senior Division) and Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority, Amritsar.
