Campaign stepped up against drug trafficking in Palampur
Police Department has stepped up its campaign against drug trafficking in Palampur and succeeded in arresting a number of drug peddlers. The police have busted three gangs of drug suppliers active in Palampur and its adjoining areas.
On a specific information, police intercepted a vehicle and recovered 1.5 kilogram charas from two residents of Banjar of Kullu district who were on their way to supply narcotics to their local handlers.
In another raid, police arrested two persons from Palampur and recovered chitta from them. One of them, a resident of Bindravan, is already involved in many cases of drug peddling.
Talking to reporters, SHO Palampur Bhupinder Singh said drug trafficking had emerged a major challenge for the police. He said the police was aware of the situation and had launched a campaign in the district to eliminate drug mafia.
He said the police was working under a plan to nab culprits. In the past two months, 12 cases had been registered under the NDPS Act and the IPC. A 70-year- old woman, who was also involved in drug trafficking, had been arrested from Bindravan village with chitta.
He said that drug trafficking had emerged a social problem. Therefore, necessary steps had to be initiated to spread awareness about the ill-effects of drugs, alcohol consumption and use of other intoxicants. NGOs, school teachers and parents were also required to work for the eradication of the menace.
