Chandigarh, August 2
Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty 50 paused their five-day record run on Friday due to weak global cues and ended the week’s last trading session in the negative territory.
Sensex plunged 885.60 points or 1.08 per cent to 80,981.95, while Nifty50 settled at 24,717.70 down 293.20 points or 1.17 per cent.
The Bank Nifty index opened on a negative tone but witnessed buying interest at lower levels. However, due to strong selling pressure, the index settled on a negative note at 51,350.
The selloff was broad-based as mid and smallcap indices on the BSE fell 1.19 per cent and 0.58 per cent, respectively. Among the sectors, Nifty Realty, Auto, IT, and Metal indices were the top losers. — TNS
