Sensex falls by 0.21%, Nifty ends below 24K

Equity benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50 surrendered early gains and settled lower in volatile trade on Tuesday, with Sensex losing 166.33 points and Nifty ending below the 24,000 level.
BSE Sensex ended at 78,593.07, down 0.21 per cent. The index had jumped 1.38 per cent to hit the day’s high of 79,852.08 during the intraday trade. NSE Nifty50, on the other hand, ended 63.05 points or 0.26 per cent down at 23,992.55. It had climbed 1.35 per cent to the day’s high of 24,382.6 during intraday trade.
The domestic indices began higher on Tuesday, following a recovery in the global market. Nifty opened with a gap up but was unable to hold the bullish momentum, erasing all gains. However, it managed to close near the psychological level of 24,000 and settled the day on a negative note at 23,993.
The volatility index, INDIA VIX, cooled off by 8%, settling near 18.74 levels. Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 indices ended lower, down 0.61 per cent and 0.39 per cent, respectively.
