The Central Government is considering launching an India Electric Mobility Index to rank states based on their electric mobility performance. The initiative aims to encourage improvement, identify excellence and facilitate practice sharing among the states.

This was stated by Sudhendu Jyoti Sinha, Program Director (mobility), Niti Aayog, while addressing FICCI’s national conference on electric vehicles in New Delhi.

If it materialises, it will likely push electric mobility in India, leading to significant increase in adoption.

At the event, HD Kumaraswamy, Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, said, “Innovation and research will be key in driving down costs and improving efficiency of electric vehicles. We are actively supporting research initiatives in battery technology, charging infrastructure and recycling.”

Kumaraswamy said the Ministry of Heavy Industries was leading the nationwide push for electric vehicle adoption, contributing to India’s ambitious net-zero target for 2070.

Tarun Kapoor, Adviser to PM, Prime Minister’s Office, said India had set the target of increasing the EV sale penetration reach to 30 per cent by 2030.

“For 2-wheelers, we should have higher targets. A complete replacement is what we have to look for in this segment. For 3-wheelers as well, the switch has to be 100 per cent, at least in some cities. For 4-wheelers, the government is fully supportive,” he added.
