Burail resident gets 5-year jail each in 2 cases of snatching

The court of Additional Sessions Judge, Chandigarh, has sentenced one Dilshad Malik, alias Kala, a resident of Burail, Sector 45, to undergo five-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) each in two separate cases of snatching.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the convict in each case.

The police had registered the first case on the complaint of a woman teacher of St Annes Convent School, Sector 32. She said on April 13, 2023, she was returning home on foot after attending a prayer at a church in St Stephen’s School, Sector 45. As she reached in front of a house at about 7 pm, a person, riding an Activa, came from behind and snatched her gold chain and sped away.

Another case against the same person was registered on the complaint of a Sector 46 resident, Kushboo Kumari, who reported that on April 7, 2023, she along with her son had gone to ‘mandi’ of Sector 46 to buy vegetables. When she was returning home at about 8.15 pm, an Activa rider came from behind and sped away after snatching her gold chain.

During the investigation the accused was arrested.

The police filed the charge sheet against the accused in both cases. Finding a prima facie case charges were framed against the accused to which he pleaded not guilty and claimed trial.

Public Prosecutor JP Singh said the prosecution had proved the case beyond a shadow of doubt. Counsel for the accused said that the accused was falsely implicated in the case.

After hearing arguments, the court held the accused guilty of the charges framed against him in both the cases and sentenced him to undergo five years imprisonment in each cases . The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 25, 000 on the convict in each cases.
