Unidentified miscreants allegedly opened fire at the car of former MLA Sanjay Talwar, who is a president of the District Congress Committee, Ludhiana, on Friday night. He was available at his house when the firing occurred. His Innova vehicle (bearing registration no PB10EU-0060) was parked outside his house in South City’s Janpath Enclave.

However, the police denied any deliberate attack on the former MLA and said it was an accidental fire, shot from a long-range weapon.

The firing reportedly occurred late on Friday night. This morning, the former MLA’s driver noticed the broken glass of the vehicle and raised the alarm. Later, the police were informed. A bullet shell was also found inside the car.

Talwar said yesterday around 7:30 pm, his son, daughter-in-law, driver and gunman came from outside and parked the vehicle outside their house. Around 9:15 am on Saturday, when the driver and gunman checked the vehicle, they saw its side glass was lying broken.

Sources said when the police checked CCTV cameras, these were found switched off between 11 pm and 11:30 pm and it was being suspected that the firing incident could have occurred during that time.

SHO, Sarabha Nagar, Inspector Neeraj Chaudhary, said the police checked CCTV cameras but nothing suspicious was found. It seemed to be an accidental gunshot, which hit the car. The bullet recovered was found to be of a long-range .315 bore gun.

ADCP-3 Ramandeep Singh Bhullar said the police conducted the preliminary probe and it was found that someone fired the accidental gunshot, which hit the car. Police checked all CCTV cameras and even questioned people in the area but nothing suspicious was found. The way the vehicle was parked also pointed towards an accidental fire. “Still the police are talking to several experts to find out what exactly could have happened. So far, a case under the Arms Act and Section 125 (endangering human life or personal safety) of the BNS has been registered and a probe is on in the matter,” ADCP Bhullar said.

Meanwhile, Talwar said it was a serious thing as he travels in the same vehicle every day, which was hit by a gunshot. But fortunately, he was not in the MPV when the bullet hit it. The entire family is terrified after the incident.

The Congress leader said he had never received any threat call or threat and did not have enmity with anyone. He has trust in the police investigation. Whether it’s an accidental fire or an deliberate attempt of some miscreants, the police would bring out the truth.
