A BTech dropout was arrested for selling fake tickets for a music concert in Delhi, police officials said on Tuesday.

The police recovered two mobiles phones, including an iPhone worth Rs 1,35,000, and an Apple watch worth Rs 50,000, all of which were purchased with the money earned fraudulently. Besides, five debit cards were also recovered from the accused’s possession.

The accused has been identified as Kaushik Raj, alias Ankit Singh (29), who sold 69 fake tickets of Diljit Singh’s concert — Dil-Luminati Tour — to be held in Delhi on October 26.

The Neb Sarai police station received a complaint on October 12, wherein a complainant said while he was trying to purchase the tickets for the concert, he came to know that Raj was selling concert tickets.

DCP (South) Ankit Chauhan said, “The complainant then contacted Raj on his mobile number who assured the tickets. The accused initially sent five complementary tickets through email to the complainant for the event and received the money in his personal account.”

“Relying on him, the complainant decided to purchase tickets for his family and friends. Till September 11, the complainant purchased 69 tickets of different category amounting to Rs 4,76,870. But when he contacted the Paytm Insider’s helpline to verify the tickets, he was informed that the tickets were fake,” the DCP said.

Realising that he had been defrauded, the victim filed a complaint, following which a case was registered under Section 318(4) (cheating) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

After collecting all the details from the complainant, the police began analysing the bank transactions for money trail. It zeroed down to a bank account in which entire cheated amount was transferred which was found registered in the name of Raj.

Further analysing the bank statement, it was revealed that Rs 4,61,870 in 16 transactions was transferred to the bank account in question and the same was utilised by the account holder for self-expenses and most of the cheated amount was withdrawn through self-cheque.

“Through surveillance and technical analysis, Raj’s location was traced to Bengaluru. A team was immediately dispatched, but his location was then tracked to a train. Following the updates, the accused was arrested at the Nizamuddin railway station,” said Chauhan.

During interrogation, the accused revealed that after defrauding the complainant and two others — residents of Chandigarh and West Bengal — of Rs 6.75 lakh, he switched off his mobile phone and left Delhi.

“He then travelled to Bengaluru, Goa and Mumbai, staying at various hotels. The accused spent the stolen money at clubs in these cities and purchased an iPhone and an Apple watch,” an official stated.

Raj, originally from Muzaffarpur, Bihar, was living in Uttam Nagar. He moved to Delhi in 2013 and dropped out of a BTech programme in his second year at a College of Engineering in Greater Noida in 2021.

“After leaving college, he started freelancing in event management. It was during this time that he came up with the idea of earning quick money by selling fake tickets,” the official added.
