A resident of Rajiv Colony was found murdered on the night of Thursday. He has been identified as Rajinder (34), a labourer. The police have arrested two juveniles for the murder. ACP Arvind Kamboj said Rajinder had had an altercation with the juveniles earlier in the day. They followed and attacked him with scissors after he had left a nearby eatery at night. The police recovered the scissors from the spot.

2 snatchers land in police net

Ravinder Kumar Nandal of Panipat had reported that two scooter-borne miscreants snatched his mobile phone at Tribune Chowk on Wednesday. During the investigation, the accused, identified as Mohit Singh (20), a resident of Ram Darbar; and Dev Kumar (19) of Hallo Majra, were arrested. The stolen phone and the scooter used in the crime were recovered from the accused.

Chandigarh girls log win

Chandigarh: UT girls recorded a two-run win over Saurashtra in the opening encounter of Women’s Under-19 T20 Tournament. Chandigarh batters - Simarpreet (7), Ganika Bansal (10) and Deepti Walia (4) - failed to deliver and the side was reduced to 30/3. However, Gulnaz (41 off 34 balls) managed to lead the team to a respectable total. Rakhi (10) and SamyraThakur (8) were the other main scorers as the side posted 101/6. In reply, Saurashtra failed to face a fine bowling performance by Aahan Vaid (3/19) and were restricted to 75. Ashaba (39) made unbeaten contribution for the side.

MDAV School win twin titles

Chandigarh: MDAV School, Sector 22, won twin titles during the CBSE Cluster XVII Kho-Kho Tournament. In the boys’ U-14 category, the Sector 22 team defeated Ganga International School by two points. Heritage Public School, Patiala, claimed third position by logging a one-point win over St Merry School, Raipur. In the boys’ U-19 final, the Sector 22 team defeated Shishu Niketan Model School, Sector 22D, by two points. Ganga International School defeated Guru Harkrishan School, Raipur, by one point to claim the third position. Meanwhile, in the girls’ category, the Sector 22 team defeated Ganga International School team by 13 points.

Team selected for netball c'ship

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Netball Association has selected local team for the upcoming 1st Senior National Mixed Netball Championship to be held in Karnataka from October 1 to 4. The squad includes Chetna, Komal, Pushpa, Himanshuka, Parneet, Jasleen, Krishnanshu Pal, Roshan Prasad, Manjot Singh, Nandu, Aksh Garcha and Yash Sheokand.

CGC win chess championship

Mohali: The girls’ chess team of Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC), Jhanjeri, won bronze medal at the IKGPTU Chess Tournament 2024, hosted by the Chandigarh Engineering College, Landran. Competing against seven colleges, the team claimed the third position. The team defeated Amritsar Group of Colleges, Amritsar, in the opening round, followed by a well-fought draw against DAV Institute of Engineering and Technology, Jalandhar. A crucial win against IK Gujral Punjab Technical University, Mohali Campus, propelled them into semi-finals. In the final round, the team defeated Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana, to bag the third position. Komal Verma, Anshul Gupta, Khushi Garg, Upasna and Shanu Jaswal represented the team.

Sports kits distributed

Chandigarh: Sports kits were distributed as part of the programme “Hanste Khelte” launched by Competent Foundation led by politician and social worker Sanjay Tandon. The programme aims to promote sports talent at the grassroots level along with school education. Students of Government Girls Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, Government Model High School, Sector 7, and Government Model High School, Indira Colony, Mani Majra, were given kits. UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria kicked off the campaign by distributing 175 sports kits among children of various schools.
