Members of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Charuni), led by their union president Gurnam Singh Charuni, today staged a dharna at the Mini-Secretariat in support of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on an indefinite fast, and the ongoing farmers' agitation on the Haryana-Punjab border.

During a symbolic protest today, 11 farmers observed fast to express solidarity with Dallewal, and later submitted a memorandum for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.

Charuni said, “Farmers of Haryana and Punjab have been protesting at the Shambhu border and Khanauri border since February and similar protests are being held in other states too to get the legal guarantee on the Minimum Support Price (MSP). Jagjit Singh Dallewal has been observing fast for nearly 25 days and his health is deteriorating. The government hasn’t been giving any response. We have extended full support to the agitating farmers as they have been raising genuine demands and speaking up for their rights. Through the memorandum, we have requested the Prime Minister to resume dialogue with the farmers at the earliest and save the life of Jagjit Singh Dallewal, else the farmers across the country will be forced to hold protests.”

"The farmers are also not satisfied with the draft of the National Policy Framework on Agricultural Marketing as attempts are being made to bring back some clauses of the three farm laws that led to the farmers' agitation in 2020-21. Private godowns and silos will be treated as grain markets and the produce will be directly sent to the godowns and silos instead of bringing the produce to grain markets first. In such circumstances, the labourers and commission agents will be left without work and ultimately the grain markets will be closed. We will not allow the government to implement these policies. The pending cases against farmers, registered during the previous agitations, should also be cancelled. We held a symbolic protest today in Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and other states," he added.

Gurnam Singh said, “The Chief Minister claims that the government has been giving MSP on 24 crops, but the fact is that only 13 or 14 crops are cultivated in Haryana. Recently, during the procurement of paddy in Haryana, farmers didn’t get the MSP due to the cuts imposed per quintal. Similarly, the farmers didn’t get MSP on mustard in the previous season because of the delay in procurement. If the Haryana Government gives the guarantee on buying produce on the MSP, then it should make a law at least in the state.”
