New Delhi, August 27

The NDA government neared the majority mark in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday after nine BJP candidates and one each from the NCP and RLM were elected unopposed in the bypolls.

Among these nine were Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu (elected from Rajasthan) and Kiran Choudhry (Haryana).

One Congress candidate was also elected to the Rajya Sabha. With today’s results, the BJP strength in the Rajya Sabha has reached 96 and NDA’s 112 in a House of 245. The effective Rajya Sabha strength is 237, with a simple majority being 119 MPs.

Among other BJP candidates elected unopposed were Minister of State for Fisheries George Kurien from Madhya Pradesh, Mission Ranjan Dass and Rameshwar Teli from Assam, Manan Mishra from Bihar, Dhirya Patil from Maharashtra, Mamata Mohanta from Odisha and Rajib Bhattacharjee from Tripura.

Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi was elected from Telangana.

Ajit Pawar NCP’s Nitin Patil from Maharashtra and RLM’s Upendra Kushwaha from Bihar also made it to the RS unopposed. Kushwaha was earlier a minister at the Centre.
