BJP appoints Baijayant Panda in-charge for Delhi poll
With the Delhi Assembly elections on the horizon, the BJP on Tuesday appointed Baijayant Panda as the in-charge for the polls.
Party national president JP Nadda confirmed the appointment through a letter. Ghaziabad MP Atul Garg has been designated as the co-incharge for the elections.
The decision is effective immediately as the BJP accelerates its preparations for the elections in the Capital. Panda, who joined the BJP in 2019 after leaving the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), previously served as the party’s election in-charge during the 2020 Assembly polls. In January 2024, he was also appointed the party’s election in-charge for Uttar Pradesh for the Lok Sabha elections.
As a Lok Sabha MP from Odisha and a vice-president of the BJP, Panda has held organisational responsibilities for Delhi, which gives him valuable insights into the party’s dynamics in the region. His experience is anticipated to play a vital role in shaping the BJP’s campaign strategy.
The elections are scheduled for February next year, and the BJP aims to strengthen its position in the Capital, where it has not held power since 1998. The party is focused on defeating the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has maintained a stronghold in Delhi since 2015, winning 67 out of 70 seats in 2015 and 63 out of 70 in the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections.
