Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Vijender Gupta, on Wednesday accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of endangering commuters’ lives by constructing flyovers with compromised integrity. Gupta, accompanied by BJP MLA Jitendra Mahajan, conducted a surprise inspection of the Nathu Colony Chowk flyover in Shahdara, raising questions about alleged corruption in its construction.

Addressing mediapersons after the inspection, Gupta said, “Due to the corruption of the Kejriwal government, commuters risk their lives every time they use this flyover. This is a glaring example of how public safety has been compromised for profit.”

The flyover, built in 2017 by the Delhi Government’s Public Works Department (PWD) and the Delhi Tourism Development Corporation (DTDC), has been plagued by construction defects since its inauguration, according to Gupta. He alleged that within a short period, cracks began appearing, and slabs started falling, prompting a ban on heavy vehicles. “If the flyover was not fit for heavy vehicles, what was the point of building it? This is not just poor planning but corruption at its worst,” Gupta remarked.

The BJP leader also criticised the Delhi Government for its inaction, claiming that a technical adviser appointed three years ago to identify flaws in the flyover’s construction is yet to submit his report. “It is shameful that even the High Court indirectly commented on AAP’s corruption. The Delhi Government’s lethargy has delayed critical investigations and repairs, leaving citizens to suffer,” he said.

Mahajan, who had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court seeking a probe into the flyover’s financial irregularities, echoed Gupta’s concerns. “The court reprimanded the government for its failure to address the issue, but no concrete steps have been taken to resolve the matter,” Mahajan said.

Gupta further alleged that the flyover, originally meant to facilitate smooth traffic and accommodate all vehicle types, now serves only two-wheelers and bicycles. “Instead of being built on cement and concrete, it seems this flyover was constructed on a foundation of corruption. Crores of public money have been wasted on this project, with no benefit to the people,” he charged.

Gupta accused the AAP government of corruption across various departments. “From hospital construction to school classrooms, every project under AAP has fallen prey to corruption. This flyover is just one example of how the government is looting public funds,” he alleged.

Demanding a thorough investigation, Gupta urged the Lieutenant-Governor to initiate a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter. “A project of this scale requires accountability. We demand a CBI inquiry to expose the corruption involved and hold those responsible to account,” he said.
