The BJP’s youth and women wings staged protests at 27 key intersections across Delhi on Tuesday, demanding accountability from former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal regarding allegations of stealing luxury toilet fixtures from his official residence, ‘Sheesh Mahal’.

LoP calls for vigilance investigation

New Delhi: Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Vijender Gupta, has formally demanded a Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) investigation into the alleged extravagant spending on the Sheesh Mahal, the former residence of Arvind Kejriwal. Gupta’s call comes in light of claims that Kejriwal spent Rs 15 crore on his bathroom alone, along with Rs 5.30 crore on curtains, Rs 70 lakh on automatic windows and Rs 64 lakh on 16 televisions. He demanded transparency regarding who authorised these expenditures and whether a proper tender process was followed.

The protests were spearheaded by Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva and BJP national secretary Alka Gurjar, who rallied supporters during peak office hours, holding placards and raising slogans against Kejriwal. Gurjar said, “Corruption in Delhi is at its peak. We’ve heard of faucet thieves in UP, but Kejriwal turned out to be a commode thief.”

At the protest near Kejriwal’s residence on Ferozeshah Road, Sachdeva said, “Kejriwal took commodes worth Rs 2 crore just to ensure that no common person could see them. This is a clear case of misusing public funds.” He emphasised that each toilet seat reportedly cost Rs 12 lakh, questioning, “Which common man’s house has such luxury? This is not just a matter of theft; it’s an insult to every hardworking citizen of Delhi.”

Various BJP leaders led protests at different locations, highlighting their outrage. MP Yogender Chandolia, leading the protest at Jalebi Chowk, criticised Kejriwal’s actions, saying, “The self-proclaimed common man is now a privileged one. It’s shocking to see someone who claims to fight for the common people indulge in such extravagance.”

Leader of the Opposition Vijender Gupta, who was at Sai Baba Chowk, condemned Kejriwal’s alleged theft, asserting, “A leader who preaches simplicity should not be living in luxury while others suffer. This behaviour shows a complete disregard for the public’s trust.” Gupta drew parallels with a former UP Chief Minister known for stealing faucets, stating, “Kejriwal has set a new low. He is the epitome of hypocrisy, claiming to be honest while indulging in such disgraceful acts.”

BJP leaders did not stop at Kejriwal alone; they also criticised CM Atishi. Kamaljeet Sehrawat claimed, “Atishi is following the same path as Kejriwal. Her administration is destroying Delhi, just as he has done over the years.” She pointed to environmental issues, stating, “While AAP boasts about pollution control, they are cutting down green trees to make way for their luxury.”

Praveen Khandelwal said, “The misuse of public funds for luxury will not be tolerated. The people of Delhi are determined to remove Kejriwal from power in the next election.” He added, “Every rupee spent on such luxuries is a rupee stolen from the public, and we will not stand for it.”
