MLA from Amritsar South assembly constituency Dr Inderbir Singh Nijjar and Municipal Commissioner Gulpreet Singh Aulakh initiated the bio-remediation work at Bhagtanwala garbage dump here today. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Nijjar said bio-remediation was important to remove garbage from the dump. He said that with the start of bio-remediation, the work of removing heaps of legacy waste has now started. He said that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had promised during the elections that legacy waste would be removed from Bhagtanwala, which has started today. Nijjar said that the people living around this garbage dump, especially from Amritsar South assembly constituency, would get great relief with this effort. He said that compost and Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) will be extracted from the waste through bio-remediation and the RDF will be used in factories as fuel.

Speaking on the occasion, Municipal Commissioner Gulpreet Singh Aulakh said that the Municipal Corporation has currently started a machine for bio-remediation, which will bio-remediate thousands of tonnes of waste every day. He said that more bio-remediation machines are being installed in the coming days. In the coming year, the large heaps of waste will be completely removed, he said, adding that keeping in mind the main goal of cleaning the city and removing the heaps of legacy waste, he himself was engaged in this work along with his officers. Municipal Commissioner Aulakh said that after removing the garbage, a waste-to-energy plant will be set up at this place.

MC Health Officer Dr Kiran Kumar, Raja Sheikh and Raja Siddiqui of Averda company, the firm entrusted with removing the waste, besides Chief Sanitary Inspector Sarabjit Singh and area residents were present on the occasion.
