US President Joe Biden commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his historic visit to Ukraine last month and his message of peace. Modi had met Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv.

The India-US joint fact sheet detailing the outcome of the Modi-Biden bilateral in the US said: “President Biden commended PM Modi for his historic visits to Poland and Ukraine”.

Biden mentioned Modi’s message of peace and the ongoing humanitarian support for Ukraine. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, answering questions on whether a specific peace proposal related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict was on the cards, said, “We are involved in a set of ongoing conversations with interlocutors on all sides.”

“People see value in India’s engagement in these conversations and we are able to talk to multiple interlocutors, and this is not something that is going to have an outcome in the present stage because there is still quite a bit of work that remains to be done,” Misri said in New York.

Biden also expressed appreciation for India’s leadership on the world stage, particularly Modi’s leadership in the G-20 and in the Global South, and his commitment to strengthen the Quad to ensure a free, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

Asked whether the Bangladesh situation was discussed, Misri said Bangladesh “also figured in the discussions and there was an exchange of views with regard to the situation there”.

In his talks with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on August 23, Modi had said both Ukraine and Russia should sit together without wasting time to end the ongoing war and that India was ready to play an “active role” to restore peace in the region.
