Beware: Scammers using digital wedding invites to dupe people
With the wedding season in full swing, cybercriminals are targeting unsuspecting individuals through fake digital wedding invitations sent via WhatsApp. These scams involve malicious APK files disguised as “Wedding Invitations”. When downloaded, these files install harmful apps on Android devices, allowing hackers to access contacts, messages, photos and even financial details.
Once inside the device, scammers use the stolen data for spreading malware, spamming, or committing fraud. Narvir Singh Rathour, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Himachal Pradesh, has urged users to verify the sender’s identity, especially if the message comes from unknown numbers. He also warned against downloading files from untrusted sources, emphasizing the high security risks posed by APK files.
The ASP advised the public to keep their devices updated with the latest software and security patches, enable two-factor authentication and remain cautious about suspicious messages, emails, or calls seeking personal information.
In addition to fake wedding invitations, scammers are also luring victims with fraudulent loan offers, promising low-interest rates and quick approvals to steal sensitive financial data. Users are encouraged to stay vigilant and protect themselves against these evolving cyber threats.
