Batala, August 17
The Batala police, which have launched a concerted drive to check criminal activities and also to apprehend accused engaged in extortions and other criminal activities, tasted success when cops arrested three persons involved in an attempt-to-murder incident that took place in Sri Hargobindpur last week.
On August 10, a local resident, Satish Kumar Loomba, was returning home after his morning walk when he was waylaid by three motorcycle-borne persons who fired shots at him. The victim acted with alacrity and managed to avoid the shots. An FIR was registered at the Sri Hargobindpur police station under various sections of the BNS and also Section 25 of the Arms Act.
The incident had shaken the confidence of local residents.
The police attached a lot of significance to the incident following which the SSP, Suhail Qasim Mir, himself led the team of officers who investigated the sequence of events leading to the crime. The other officers who were a part of the team were Sri Hargobindpur DSP Rajesh Kakkar, Sri Hargobindpur police station SHO Bikram Singh, Ghuman SHO police station Harmik Singh and CIA in-charge Sukhraj Singh.
The team worked on several leads and today (on Saturday) arrested three accused — Dr Sarwan Singh, Surinderjit Singh and Manjit Singh. SSP Suhail Qasim Mir said Dr Sarwan Singh had borrowed ~30 lakh from Satish Kumar. However, a few days ago when Satish Kumar asked Dr Sarwan Singh to return his money he decided to do away with him by engaging the services of two professional shooters. “All the three accused have been arrested. We will also be arresting the two shooters in the next few days as we have certain clues. The motorcycle used in the crime has been impounded,” added the SSP.
