Ban export of weapons to Israel, say CPM activists

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) staged a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office, condemning Israel for its continuous attacks on Palestine over the past year. They demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government impose a ban on the export of drones and weapons to Israel.

CPM Secretary Jagat Ram criticised the Modi government for its silence on Israeli aggression, stating that India has historically supported Palestine and opposed Israeli occupation since Independence. He argued that the government’s stance is inconsistent with India’s long-standing foreign policy, which has traditionally condemned Israeli actions.

Ram further alleged that the Modi administration’s inaction is tied to the significant investments of the Adani Group in Israeli arms companies and ports, claiming that the group’s involvement in the production of weapons and drones in Hyderabad may be influencing the government’s silence.

Ram highlighted that over the past year, Israel’s attacks have forced the displacement of around 750,000 Palestinians, making them refugees in their own homeland. He added that reports indicate over 45,000 Palestinians have been killed, with a significant portion of the casualties being women and children.

He also criticised the US for its continued military support to Israel, stating that since 2016, the US has provided $124 billion in aid, including an annual military assistance of $3.8 billion. Recently, the US extended an additional $5.3 billion to Israel for military equipment.

Citing global opposition to Israeli actions, Ram pointed out that protests have erupted in over 57 countries, including parts of Latin America and the UK. He concluded by referencing a ruling by the International Court of Justice in January, declaring Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories illegal, yet noting that Western nations continue to supply military aid to Israel, posing a threat to global peace.
