New Delhi, July 20

In a letter to Delhi’s Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar, Lieutenant-Governor (L-G) VK Saxena has raised concerns about Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s health while in judicial custody at Tihar Jail.

The letter, based on a report by the prison superintendent, alleges that Kejriwal has been deliberately consuming a low-calorie diet despite being provided with sufficient home-cooked food.

‘CM losing weight for bail’

Kejriwal is a very cunning person and is aware of the legal grounds on which he can get bail. Hence, he is continuously trying to lose weight deliberately so that he could claim before the court that his weight is decreasing in jail, and therefore, he should be granted bail. – Virendra Sachdeva, Delhi BJP president

According to the Raj Niwas communication, the report highlights several instances of “wilful low-calorie intake” by Kejriwal between June 6 and July 13. This period saw Kejriwal’s weight drop from 63.5 kg to 61.5 kg, suggesting inadequate calorie consumption. Additionally, the report notes discrepancies in Kejriwal’s insulin administration and significant variations between glucometer and continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS) readings.

The letter states, “On June 19, the glucometer reading before lunch was 104 mg/dL, while the CGMS reading at the same time was 82 mg/dL. On July 6 and 7, Kejriwal reportedly did not consume the prescribed diet, with variations in his insulin administration.”

The L-G’s letter emphasises the potential medical and legal implications of Kejriwal not adhering to his prescribed diet and medication regimen, particularly given his history of type-II diabetes mellitus.

Saxena has urged the prison authorities to advise Kejriwal to follow the recommended dosage of medicine and insulin, along with the specified diet, and to establish strict protocols for monitoring his blood sugar levels.
