Set up your cosy corner
Priya Jagat
Winter in North India is welcomed with warmth. Wardrobes are eagerly given a makeover, so are the interiors. If woolens replace cottons inside closets, then sheer upholstery makes room for heavy alternatives. Rugs are pulled out and darker shades grace the interiors. Winter makeover doesn’t have to be drastic; some subtle changes can work wonders too. Take some cues...
Bright side
Turn your home into a cozy den, while everything outside is cold. The simplest way to lend warmth to your house is by placing cushions, lamps and candles and spreading carpets and rugs. Bright cushions are a fabulous way to add warmth and colour even to a decades-old couch.
You are spoilt for choice when it comes to this particular home accessory. Check interior stores to pick cushions in velvet with applique work, embroidered kilims or silks, Scottish check and tartans. Knitted cushions and throws are a rage this season. Bring out an old, favourite woven shawl to drape on a couch. Spread the warmth of wool throughout the home.
Warm endings
Rugs work like magic, keeping the cold at bay. Spread smaller carpets and rugs in front of windows, couches and armchairs. An open gallery feels so balmy with a few rugs thrown in. Choose from Persian carpets in silk, woven woolen rugs, handloom rugs or block-printed durries.
Light up your world
Add a few extra lamps on side tables and consoles. Lend a makeover to a lamp by changing the lampshade — a deep maroon, black or even a bright print would make a difference to a room. A dark gallery or a neglected corner of a room can be instantly given a facelist with a pedestal lamp. Use candles and candle stands to add charm to an evening at home.
