Pooja wins silver, Sajan loses in last-4

Chandigarh, November 1

Pooja Gehlot settled for silver in the women’s 53kg event at the U-23 World Wrestling Championships in Budapest after going down to 2017 senior world champion Haruna Okuno of Japan. Pooja lost 0-2 (victory by fall) in the final. 

This is the second medal — both silver — for India at this year’s edition. Ravinder had finished second in the men’s freestyle 61kg.

Pooja had entered the final after a 8-4 victory against Turkey’s Zeynep Yetgil in the semifinals.

Three-time World Junior Wrestling Championships medallist Sajan Bhanwal lost 4-5 to Kodai Sakuraba of Japan in the semifinals of the 77kg Greco-Roman event. The Kharkhauda wrestler will now fight for bronze. Bhanwal beat Per Albin Olofsson of Sweden 6-2 to enter the semifinals. —TNS
