Hockey legend Dhyan Chand remembered

As the country celebrates the 110th birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand as National Sports Day, Mata Sahib Kaur Hockey Academy, Jarkhar, remembered the wizard by organising an exhibition match.
Players, organizers and guests garlanded a statue of Dhyan Chand and observed silence to pay tributes. Rachhpal Singh Pali, a former international-level hockey player, Ajit Pal Singh, deputy district education officer, Ludhiana and Arwinder Singh, a sports promoter were guests of honor.
They urged upon the players to emulate Dhyan Chand who brought unparallel fame to the nation through his outstanding contributions in the field of hockey. The guests also requested the Union Government to bestow the Bharat Ratna award on Dhyan Chand considering his achievements.
An exhibition match was also organised to mark Dhyan Chand’s birth anniversary. The two teams, Olympian Prithipal Singh XI and Jagtar XI dished out superb stick work and eventually the former managed to squeeze past 8-7.
Arwinder Singh announced a cash assistance of Rs 21,000 for the development of sports infrastructure at the main stadium of Jarkhar village. Jagroop Singh Jarkhar, chief organiser of the hockey academy thanked the guests, office-bearers of the Matat Sahib Kaur Sports Club and players for sparing time to celebrate anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand.
