Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana, organised a two-day 57th annual athletics meet which was inaugurated today.

The two-day event radiated the spirit of competition among the participating athletes on the first day. The event was graced by guests and Training & Curriculum director Sukhbir Singh Grewal (Punjab Institute of Sports, Chandigarh), and Amritpal Singh, national record holder in long jump (guest of honour), with director, GNDEC, MS Saini and Secretary Sports, GNDEC, Dr Gunjan Bhardwaj, along with conduct officials of GNDEC.

In the inaugural address, the guests emphasised on the importance of games and sports in bringing out the hidden talent by developing challenging spirit, the spirit of cooperation, discipline, tolerance and the quality of leadership, besides physical fitness which are very important in the modern era of competition.

This was followed by the torchbearers’ run and the sports flame was set ablaze. The college students, who excelled in various national, state and inter-university sports events during this academic session, lit the torch and took oath to compete with a sense of sportsmanship. The event began with the march past by NCC cadets of the college.

The Director read out the College Sports Report and highlighted the achievements of the sports students. The bhangra team of the college presented the Punjabi folk dance ‘Malwai Giddha’, which was highly applauded by all.

Later, the programme was followed by many athletic events such as 100-m race, 200-m, 400-m, 800-m race, 4x100-m relay race, long jump, high jump, javelin throw, shot put etc. The prizes were given away to the winners of various competitions.

Triple jump (boys): 1. Assa Singh (Mechanical Engineering) 2. Sahil Chaudhary (Civil Engineering) 3. Wahegurupal Singh (Mechanical Engineering)

Triple jump (girls): 1. Kumari Deepshikha (Electrical Engineering) 2. Mandeep Kaur (Electronics and Communication Engg) 3. Shruti Roy (Mechanical Engg)

1500-m relay race (girls): 1. Kirti Malik (Electrical Engineering) 2. Harpreet Kaur (Computer Science and Engineering) 3. Parneet Kaur (Electronics and Communication Engineering)
