At least 30 regular safai sewaks (sanitation workers) of the Municipal Council here had reportedly hired other persons to work on their behalf. This came to fore when Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Poonam Singh checked their attendance at 6 am at the lawns of Homoeopathic Medical College Hospital near Nehru Park today.
Caught unawares, some of the workers reportedly revealed that they were paid Rs 5,000 or Rs 6,000 as monthly wages by regular sanitation workers, who get Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000 as monthly salary from the council. “The unethical practice has been going on for the past many years,” questioning indicated.
Describing it illegal, the SDM directed the council to issue show-cause notices to the erring employees and warned that such practice would not be tolerated.
She told the staff to provide details about their place of work and also warned that attendance of ad hoc sanitation workers would also be checked to ensure fairness.
