Raninder’s I-T case adjourned till July 26
Ludhiana: An Income Tax case involving CM’s son Raninder Singh was on Thursday adjourned till July 26. The case was fixed for consideration on service of notice of accusation upon Raninder before the court of CJM Jaapinder Singh, but he was on leave. The department has alleged the accused made false statement twice on oath before the department by denying being a beneficiary of any foreign asset or having association with any foreign entity. TNS
Bangladesh man held for cheating
Patiala: The police have arrested a Bangladesh national who was staying at Khanaurha village in the district under a fake identity. He has been identified as DM Younis Haider. The police said the accused had married Asma, who hails from Khanaurha, during the latter’s visit to Bangladesh. The accused failed to get an Indian visa. Later, he managed to enter India and stayed with Asma. A case has been registered on the charges of cheating and forgery. TNS
Two drunk cops suspended
Muktsar: Two cops, including an ASI, were on Thursday suspended after they were found drunk on duty. Those suspended are ASI Daljit Singh and constable Kuldeep Singh, both posted at Kotbhai police station. SSP Sushil Kumar said the duo was found drunk during a surprise check by the SHO of Kotbhai police station. SHO Paramjeet said both of them were under the influence of liquor and were having a verbal duel in the police station a week ago. Action was recommended against them." The photos of two men in uniform had also gone viral recently while drinking in a bus. The SHO, however, claimed that the suspended cops were different from those seen in the video. TNS
Nursing college principal shifted
Gurdaspur: Nurses of GNM School of Nursing ended their two-day long protest after the authorities shifted the school principal Manjit Kaur to the Civil Surgeon's office. The nurses had been adamant on their demand that the principal be dismissed from service. However, the three-member committee set up on the directions of Civil Surgeon Dr HS Ghai recommended her transfer and not dismissal. The committee was headed by Assistant Civil Surgeon Dr SK Hans. Dr Bhawna Lakhanpal, a senior doctor, has been appointed principal. TNS
Chahal sent to judicial remand
Patiala: After the Enforcement Directorate (ED) grilled alleged drug supplier Jagjit Chahal for two days, a special court here on Thursday sent him to judicial remand. The next hearing is on May 31. Chahal was arrested from Mohali on May 15 on the charges of investing money generated from drug trade in properties. The following day, the ED got his two-day custody. The ED today did not plead for extending his remand. It said it was satisfied with the information about his links and investments made in the recent past. The ED had, last month, attached properties and seven business firms worth more than Rs 54 crore owned by Chahal and his relatives. TNS
BSc exam to be conducted again
Fazilka: The Panjab University has decided to cancel the BSc Chemistry part-B examination of fourth semester as questions in the paper were out of syllabus. About 40 students of MR Government College had apprised Panjab University senate member from Fazilka Sandeep Dhuria. He said the Controller of Examination informed today that the university had decided to conduct the paper again, three or four days after of the final examination of BSC that will be held on June 2. Car taken at gunpoint found; 4 arrested
Barnala: The police on Thursday arrested four persons and recovered the car which was forcibly taken from a businessman of Tapa near the city on May 16. Police said Harjider Singh from Bathinda, Shapinder Singh from Rajasthan and Jagjit Singh of Rampura are members of a gang while their kingpin is absconding. Barnala SSP Baljot Rathore said the trio were arrested at a naka near Tapa. The accused were traveling in the car with a fake number plate. Another member of the gang, Nishar Khan, was also arrested. Days after girl’s death, two booked for rape
Muktsar: The Malout police have booked two persons for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl, who had later died in a mishap near Ramsara in Fazilka. Maya Devi, the victim’s mother alleged that Gaggi and Lovepreet of Sangrur had kidnapped and raped the girl. She said her daughter went to school on May 2, but did not return. Later that day, she came to know that the girl had been kidnapped and had got injured in an accident. “On her deathbed, she named the duo,” said Maya Devi. TNS
Body recovered from graveyard
Sangrur: A body was recovered from a graveyard in Malerkotla today. The deceased has been identified as Kashim Ali (28) from Telliya Street, Malerkotla. His family dismissed the suicide theory and alleged he was murdered. The body had injury marks on the head and other parts. The police have registered a murder case against unidentified persons on the statement of Ali’s brother Dilshand. The body was handed over to the family after the postmortem. TNS
Bike thief flees from police station
Muktsar: A thief, resident of Chak Bir Sarkar village, who was brought to Sadar Muktsar police station in connection with a motorcycle theft ran away within a few minutes. “An investigating officer was questioning him. When the officer got busy in some other work, the thief managed to flee,” claimed sources. When asked Sushil Kumar, SSP, Muktsar, said, “Cops had brought a thief to the police station. The thief even admitted that he had stolen a motorcycle but he managed to flee.”. — TNS
Under debt, man commits suicide
Tanda Urmar (Hoshiarpur): A carpenter living in Khojpur committed suicide by swallowing some poisonous substance. The Dasuya police have recovered the body of Kuldeep Singh from a farm near Ralhan village. Rajveer Singh, son of Kuldeep, said his father was a carpenter and was disturbed due to debt. — OC
Drug smuggler gets three-year jail
Hoshiarpur: Additional District and Sessions Judge PS Roy today convicted a narcotics smuggler and sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment and ordered him to pay a fine of Rs 5,000. If the penalty is not paid he will have to undergo an additional imprisonment for two months. — OC
Travel agent booked
Hoshiarpur: A travel agent has been booked for duping a man of Rs 1,40,000 on the pretext of sending him abroad. The Model Town police have registered a case against him. Balvir Singh of Rasulpur village told the police that to send him to Malaysia, travel agent Surinder Kumar of Safipur village in Jalandhar took Rs 1.4 lakh from him. However, the accused neither sent him abroad nor returned his money. — OC
