The Punjab Government on Friday approved 100 acres of land of Sri Chamkaur Sahib Nagar Panchayat in Rupnagar district for setting up a skills and vocational university.

Local Government Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu said the university would be a tribute to the martyrdom of the ‘vadde Sahibzaade’.

The ‘vadde Sahibzaade’ of the 10th Guru, Guru Gobind Singh — Baba Ajit Singh, born at Paunta Sahib, and Baba Jujhar Singh, the second son, was born at Anandpur Sahib. The two were 18 and 16 years old respectively when they achieved martyrdom at Chamkaur Sahib.

The minister said during the budget session of the state assembly, Technical Education Minister Charanjit Singh Channi had demanded a university at Chamkaur Sahib for professional education.

The demand was accepted on the spot by Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, who has announced the establishment of a university at Chamkaur Sahib, he added.

Attacking the SAD-BJP alliance in the state, he said the previous government neglected the needs of the youth which resulted in a rise in unemployment.

He said the university would be a pioneer in equipping the youth with latest technical and professional skills thus paving the way for ample employment avenues. — PTI
