Justice Mongia dead

Chandigarh, August 21

Former Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court and a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Justice RS Mongia (77), passed away this morning. The cremation will take place at the Sector 25 cremation ground at 3 pm tomorrow.

Born on June 10, 1940, Justice Mongia obtained his law degree in 1963 from Panjab University, Chandigarh, before he was enrolled as an advocate in July 1964. He started practicing in the Punjab and Haryana High Court and was elevated as a Judge on June 15, 1990.

He was transferred to the Gauhati HC as Acting Chief Justice on June 12, 2001, and appointed Chief Justice on September 21, 2001. He retired on June 10, 2002.

He joined as chairperson of the Punjab State Human Rights Commission in November 2007. He was then appointed president of one of the Benches of the permanent Lok Adalat with effect from July 2010.
