Indu Bala wins Mukerian seat with slender margin

Hoshiarpur, October 24
Congress’s Indu Bala won from Mukerian by defeating BJP’s Jangi Lal Mahajan by a margin of 3,440 votes. The seat fell vacant following the death of Congress MLA Rajnish Kumar Babbi. Indu Bala is Babbi’s widow.
Congress secured 53,910 votes, while the BJP got 50,470 votes and AAP’s GS Multani secured 8,261 votes and remained third. SAD (A) candidate Gurvatan Singh Multani polled 1,286 votes, Hindustan Shakti Sena’s Arjun got 558, Independent candidate Amandeep Ghotra got 268 votes, while NOTA polled 879 votes.
The counting in Mukerian started at 8 am at a counting centre set up at SPN College. As soon as the result was declared, Indu Bala’s supporters came out raising slogans in her favour and expressed happiness over her victory by dancing to the beats of dhol. A victory procession was taken out through the town.
Indu Bala said this was the victory of the people of the constituency, adding that it was the proof of people’s mandate to the policies of Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh-led Congress government. She thanked voters of the area and party workers for their support and said no stone would be left unturned to ensure overall development of the constituency.
