A Murrah buffalo from Lakshmi Dairy Farm at Chak Vairo Ke village in Fazilka district, ‘Dhanno’, has set a national record by giving 26.57-kg milk in 24 hours at the Central Institute for Research on Buffaloes (CIRB), Hisar.

The seven-year-old is already a record holder at the PDFA International Dairy and Agri Expo at Jagraon in 2015.

Its owner, Sherbaj Singh, said ‘Rani’, another Murrah buffalo from their farm, had set a record by producing 26.335-kg milk in a day at the National Livestock Championship in Muktsar in 2016. “Our two Murrah bulls, ‘Daara’ and ‘Sikander’, had been selected for the 17th Progeny Testing Programme of the Central Government. These were the only private bulls in the country to be included in this prestigious programme,” he added.

“Dhanno’s two-year-old offspring ‘Kohinoor’ has been tested by the CIRB for semen production,” said Sherbaj.

Dr Inderjeet Singh, Director, CIRB, said, “Dhanno has set a national record in any government institute or fair organised by the government. Some buffaloes may have given more milk in the equal time, but the recording is not done by any government institute.”

He added, “We record the milk yield of buffaloes without charging fee on fixed days. The earlier record was held by a buffalo from Dhansu village (Hisar) — 26.44-kg milk in a day.”

On ‘Dhanno’s’ diet, Sherbaj said he did not give anything special to her. “It is a myth that the milk yield of a buffalo increases with consumption of apples,” he added.
