Celebrating 80 yrs of Fazilka clock tower

The historical Ram Narain Periwal Clock Tower was decked up like a bride on its 80th founder’s day on Thursday. From flowers to decorative lights, everything was in place.
To catch the fancy of visitors, a museum was set up inside the clock tower. Artists painted the Asafwala War Memorial, the national bird and the oldest building of the town, Radhuvar Bhawan, on walls. Then there were paintings spreading the save environment message. The icing on the cake was the pictures displaying the rich culture of the state.
A cultural programme was organised on Wednesday, which continued till the midnight. Chief guest Isha Kalia, Deputy Commissioner, Fazilka, said the administration had taken up the initiative to preserve the tower by keeping it pollution-free. She also honoured Sushil Periwal and his family. The photograph of the clock tower adorns the Punjab Art Gallery in Chandigarh. It is famous for its unique design and masonry in the country. It is stated that one such clock tower of almost the same design is also situated in Lyallpur in Pakistan and were constructed at the same time. It was built for Rs 22,000 80 years ago. The clock machine was brought from London and was fixed at the height of 87 feet.
