Unidentified persons attacked the parental house of Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad, president of the All India Sikh Students’ Federation (AISSF), at Peer Mohammad village on the Moga-Amritsar highway in Zira subdivision of Ferozepur district late on Sunday night. Karnail was not at home at that time. His father, Gurcharan Singh, and other family members were present. No one was hurt in the incident.
Gurcharan Singh said he did not hear shots fired at the house as he was fast asleep in a room. He noticed the bullet marks on the main gate on Monday morning when he came back from a gurdwara after offering prayers.
Local police personnel who reached the spot found that the shots were fired from a .12-bore gun. Some pellets were recovered from the spot. An FIR has been registered at Makhu police station.
“We have no enmity with anyone. Let the police investigate the incident and trace the culprits,” he said. Peer Mohammad’s tough stand on Sikh issues, particularly Referendum 2020 and Khalistan, could have led to the attack, a local police officer said. His younger brother, Kulwant Singh, is a Deputy Jail Superintendent at the Kapurthala Central Jail, where many hardcore gangsters are lodged.
Suresh Arora, DGP, has asked the Ferozepur Range IG to probe the incident and identify the culprits. Security persons were deployed at the house as a precautionary measure.
